Calculation Methods

Prayer times are calculated based on the position of the sun. Different calculation methods are used by different Islamic organizations around the world. The default method used on this website is the Egyptian General Authority Of Survey method, which is widely accepted.

Other common methods include Muslim World League (MWL), Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Umm al-Qura University in Makkah, and the University of Islamic Sciences in Karachi.

Prayer Time Definitions

  • Fajr: When the sky begins to lighten (dawn).
  • Sunrise: When the first part of the Sun appears above the horizon.
  • Dhuhr: When the Sun begins to decline after reaching its highest point in the sky.
  • Asr: The time when the length of any object's shadow reaches a factor of the length of the object itself plus the shadow length at noon.
  • Maghrib: Soon after sunset.
  • Isha: When the sky becomes dark and there is no scattered light.
  • Jummah: Friday congregational prayer, typically held shortly after midday.
